Ice Ice Baby

Files under Daily Happenings | Posted by THE J-Mo

So there’s all this speculation that we’re going to have some sort of weather “event” early tomorrow morning. Most of the day’s local news revolved around that. Down here in the south, we freak out too easily IMO when it comes to even just the talk of snow or ice coming in.

Kevin summed it up well:

Snow good. Ice bad.

When I lived up north in Chicago, we’d get half a foot of snow. And you know what? Businesses were open, school was in session, buses were running and people were driving without any major mishaps. It’s true that up north we had a lot more experience with this kind of weather and are more prepared for it. Not only us, but the street crews as well. Down here shouldn’t be that different but it is. Heck, schools get closed here because it MIGHT snow. Anyway… if we do get some frozen precip here and you have to get out, just be careful and use your head. Don’t drive on ice like you would on rain. I think that’s one of the biggest problems. That and just being a boob.

With the predicted weather, I’m sure there was probably a run on milk and bread at the grocery. Do people eat more of that when they get stuck at home?

If you’re going to have to be stuck at home for let’s say 2 days, what would you like to have on hand to eat? (Assume you have power)

For me: cans of soup, ramen noodles, hot chocolate, orange juice, Mt. Dew, a few TV dinners, some frozen pizzas and a few of those Bertoli meal in a bag thingys. I want easy stuff as if I’m stuck at home, I’m not trying to impress anybody with culinary skills, I just want something so I’m not hungry. Oh yeah, a box of Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies wouldn’t hurt either.

Yeah, I’m lost on the milk and bread thing, too. With small kids, I guess I can see why you’d need milk. But the grocery store frenzy is crazy. I made the mistake of going grocery shopping in Birmingham inadvertantly on the day before an ice storm (not because I panicked, but I was lazy and had waited too long to do routine grocery shopping). I lucked out and walked right past the 20 people waiting in each line right up to a newly opened register. But it ws a zoo.

Anyway, current inventory indicates we have pop tarts, Mountain Dew, microwaveable chicken fingers… plenty of food that should last the whole ten minutes snow/ice is on the ground.

Oh I laughed so hard through this entire post!

It’s so true though! People down south (no offense) tend to not know how to handle even a LITTLE bit of winter weather! It was snowing when I drove home from work again last night… so what?!?!

I think you missed hot chocolate on your list. And tomato soup. And lots of cheese and bread to make grilled cheese sandwiches. Man, I miss snow days! (Incidently, in the TMI list, I flipped my calendar this morning to a picture of my old roommate and I making snow angels in the foot plus snow we got last February… that was a great snow day!)
